HALLOWEEN EVENTS: THE PITTSBURGH ZOO BOO
*This is not paid product placement. We were given tickets to visit The Pittsburgh Zoo during this event. As always, all opinions expressed are of my own.
We recently had the pleasure of attending the Pittsburgh Zoo Boo. It's an annual event that occurs during the last two weekends in October, rain or shine. Our family loves visiting the zoo in Pittsburgh, but we've never ventured out for this event before. So we were more then thrilled when they offered to give us tickets and experience this Halloween extravaganza. Since it was opening day, we figured it was best to head out early and arrive right when they opened to try and beat the crowds. Especially since the weather kept showing the possibility of rain, the sooner we got there the better. We were the first handful of people in line, the kids couldn't bear the anticipation.
As we made out way inside, we were instantly greeted with candy and an incredibly impressive haunted house. Now don't worry, I say haunted house lightly as it wasn't anything too scary for kids (we saw a lot of babies stroll through that seemed to really enjoy it). The lights are turned off and there's fog machines all about. With colored lights illuminating all of the different displays. Ghosts goblins and skeletons galore. As we made our way through, we were taken into a creepy crawly display of real life spiders and snakes. Making it back outside and onto another trail of treats, refreshments, and blow up displays.
Once we got through the Haunted Hill, we decided to stop and look at all of the animals as we made our way through all of the other activities and trick or treat stations planted through out the entire zoo and aquarium. Skull Island had an indoor craft station where you could make your own lollipop ghost, color, and decorate a superhero mask. The kids really enjoyed the larger then life operation table they had of a sea turtle, the different animals x-ays, and games. Up the hill was the boo-quarium where we got to see all of our favorite underwater friends (like the otters). I love that they have a tunnel below the aquarium where you can walk through and see the polar bears and seals, swim all around you. They even had an underwater pumpkin carving demonstration.
Over by the pumpkin patch pavilion was the monster mash dance party and costume contest/parade. The music was pumping as we walked through to see all of the different characters that were there for a meet and greet. The only two things the kids wanted to skip were the magic show and face painting. Those activities were stationed at the end of the zoo and they were simply tuckered out. We ended our visit with a trip inside the gift shop and made our way out. Just as we were heading out, the crowds were really starting to pile in. I'd have to say we spent a solid three hours making our way through everything and had such a wonderful time. The kids were beaming from ear to ear, making me one incredibly happy mama.
I highly recommend putting this event on your list when Halloween rolls around next year. Its well worth it! We all had a great time hitting each treat station, as well as seeing all of the animals. Definitely would recommend planning on arriving around 9-9:30 as the zoo boo starts at 10 and ends at 3. It was not crowded at all, we were even able to stand at some of the animal habitats by ourselves. Best of all, it didn't rain one bit. We didn't have any trouble finding a parking spot and the traffic on the way there was not as bad as we expected ||we were about a 45 min drive away||. The kids had such a good time that they kept asking if we could come back the next day.
