Tutorial: Make Your Own Social Media Icons

Blog design is such a dream to me. I love being able to create different unique pieces for everyone's little space on the interwebz.

I also think some of this knowledge should be shared with those of you that want to start making your own blog elements.

So today I want to share my own tutorial on how to make your own social media icons by simply using PicMonkey.

1. Click on "Edit a photo" and upload a blank white page. Any size will do, however mine was 910 by 400. Then proceed to click on the overlay button on the left hand side of the page.

2. Once your on the overlays, click on the given shapes that you would like to use for your social media icons.

As you can see, I used a circle from the geometric overlay.
The arrows were from the arrows overlay. Of course!
The flags and dotted circles were from the symbols overlay.

You'll want to place them as close together as you can to create a clean straight line of buttons.

Then click on each shape and change the color  [I used a different color palette from design-seeds.com for each set for buttons] and size [luckily I didn't need to change any of their sizes except for the flags] to your liking.

3. Click on the Your Own overlay button.

Upload a set of social media silhouettes [you can find a free set, here]

You can only upload one silhouette at a time. Change the size and color to your liking for each one.

Either set them inside of the icons or next to them [like I did for the set of arrows].

4. When your finally done fixing each social media icon the way you like.

Click on Basic Edits and then Crop.

You'll want to get rid of the excess page that is left over.

Once you've adjusted the square around your social media buttons, simply click Apply to save the crop.

5.   While your still in Basic Edits. Click on Resize.

Enter in the size that will fit into your own sidebar. [Make sure the "Keep Proportions" box is filled]

Click Apply.

6. Then Click on Save and your done!

Step #3 shows you how to upload the icons for "pinterest, twitter, facebook, etc" along with a site on where to download a full set.

Hope this helps!

Okay- Totally stupid question but if you save all of the icons as one image how do you make it so when they click on each individual one it takes them to the right social media site?

I don't even know if my question makes sense but I've always uploaded free social media icons and they are always each individual icon and then I add the link in the html.

I love these but I haven't got a clue how to make them so I can click on each one to take me where I want to go.  Would I have to use an image map for that?

Joanna- Not a stupid question at all!

I've found it's best to upload your set of social media icons to www.image-maps.com and put the necessary links to each icon.

Seriously will save you so much more time as compared to dealing with each individual icons, uploading, putting the correct html together, etc.

I even use image-maps for my blog design headers and sponsor post highlights.

This seems to be a common question regarding making your own set of icons, I think this might be one of my next tutorials:)

Definitely recommend using www.image-maps.com to put the necessary links with each icon as a whole, seriously is a lifesaver and super easy to do so!

Thanks! Glad I could help! & Your very welcome:)
Hi Liz, great tutorial. My only problem is that it seems you have to be a premium member of picmonkey in order to use your own photo. Am I missing something?

 Hi Tammy,

PicMonkey just recently changed all of their features in the last week or so. Am seriously upset that they've decided to make this move and restrict almost all of their site to only paid members.

Sorry your just now seeing this tutorial! Hopefully when I have some spare time I'll make a new version for those with photoshop or perhaps another free site I stumble upon.
WAAAHHHH! That's l a m e.That would be awesome. I'm going to come back to your blog. You got good stuff going on over there.

Hey I have a new Q- Where could I find a basic Instagram icon (like the one you have-- i.e., minus the gray background or just the actual b&w silhouette)? I've tried to look for it everywhere but to no avail :|. Thanks in advance!

Hey! Great question.

When searching for social media icons make sure to type in the search box "free social media icon- vectors or silhouette". It may take some time, but their definitely out there. I've included two different links for you that can easily be downloaded and used as is or customized to your liking.

Hope this helps!:)

I do not leave a leave a response, however I browsed a few remarks
on this page "Tutorial: Make Your Own Social Media Icons".

I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it's okay. Is it simply me or do a few of these responses look like they are coming from brain dead visitors? :-P And, if you are writing at other social sites, I would like to follow everything fresh you have to post. Would you list of the complete urls of all your shared pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?

In that case, this kind of question should not be taken from any show telecasted in specific
country. You must definitely be planning to make it special and memorable by keeping a good theme, ordering the best food and choosing the best games.

The decline of the East side blues scene was disheartening, but, it also gave rise to the need for a fresh start, which came in the form of the
next blues-only venue, Antone's, founded by the late Clifford Antone, during the summer of 1975.
